What is Electric Latch Retraction or ELR ?

Electric Latch Retraction (ELR),  also referred to as a solenoid-style exit device is a style of a door-latching hardware device utilizing a push bar, or crash bar, as the exit means. This style of lock uses a solenoid to retract the locking mechanism. Used in access control systems and(or) with Auto Door Openers for ADA, the solenoid uses a short, 100 to 200-millisecond high current draw up to 15-30 amps to thrust the latch open. This thrust is louder than other Latch Retraction methods and requires a High-In-Rush power supply located close to the door hardware and a larger gauge wire than other access control electrified locks.

Wire gauges up to 12 AWG stranded are commonly specified by the power supply manufacturer. The actual wire gauge depends on the length of the wire.
